SomatoEmotional Release

Body work accompanied by conversation

SomatoEmotional Release was developed by Dr John Upledger as an extension of craniosacral therapy. It combines manual work on the body with therapeutic conversation. I trained at the Upledger Institute.

One point of clarification: I am not a psychologist or a state-registered psychotherapist, and I do not use those titles. I am a Heilpraktiker – a German health profession, licensed by the state to practise healing without being a physician. In Germany this work falls under “Psychotherapie nach dem Heilpraktikergesetz”, a permission granted after examination by the German public health authority.

How a session works

You lie on the treatment couch. I look for the place for my hands where I can best support the process – not by a scheme, but according to what I find under my hands.

Whatever theme comes up, we go into it in conversation. In Upledger’s model it is about working through impressions and inner images and so coming into deeper contact with the unconscious.

Movements may arise, so-called unwindings. They can stay limited to one region of the body or involve the whole of it. A session lasts at least an hour. How often follows from the case history, the findings and your concern.

When this work comes into question

Sometimes it arises in the course of another treatment, sometimes people come specifically for it. Typical reasons are a bereavement, emotional strain, or the experience of having recognised a problematic pattern of behaviour without being able to change it.

Often it is a matter of talking alone not leading any further, so that the body has to be brought in to reach a solution. In Upledger’s model, tensions and information held in the body are released in the process. Work with the inner child is part of it too.

The condition is that you are in a state for it and that physical, structural complaints are not in the foreground. If they are, I treat those first – with osteopathy, chiropractic or physiotherapy.

What happens if something big comes up

This work is not manipulative – I accompany your system, I do not push it. In my experience, as a rule only those themes come up that you can also bear and that can be worked with in this setting.

You set the pace at all times. If a theme is too much for you, we stop there – you decide that, not I.

Where that is not enough, I work together with doctors and psychotherapists.

Why people come to me

For example: distressing experiences and accidents, birth trauma, persistent tension and exhaustion, support in grief, physical complaints without clear findings, and many others.

This work does not replace medical or psychotherapeutic treatment. If it becomes clear that you need that, I tell you so and refer you on – immediately in an acute crisis.

Appointments and fees

A session costs between 80 and 120 euros, depending on the work required and the length. Before the first session I tell you what to expect.

The reasons named here are examples of application. They are in no way a promise of cure, and treatment is not indicated in every case.
